Without ice cover, the Arctic Sea’s dark waters absorb the sun’s heat more easily instead of reflecting it as the ice does. Researchers had known for years that ice covering in the Arctic Sea had been rcing in area, but the new study showed that the volume of sea ice was rcing as well.
　　Data from the study will help scientists understand how fast the volume of Arctic ice is rcing and how soon the region might be “nearly ice-free” in summer.
